Companies around the world - in transportation, exploration, energy, construction or hospitality - are all looking upwards for the next growth opportunity. Space is quickly becoming a place where the industries that power our global economy will conduct business.

What do we call an economic area like this, that is not limited to a single planet, and no longer has physical boundaries? We can't call it an industry, when private industrial groups can generate revenue and profit not only from the Earth but from near-Earth asteroids NEAs , the Moon and Mars and beyond.

It is simply a medium in which humanity conducts commerce. An in-space population of this magnitude will require enormous amounts of energy to live, work, and transit.

This energy will come from solar power, which is more effective when gathered in space due to the lack of a filtering atmosphere; and chemical rockets, which will be the primary transportation mechanism for the foreseeable future. The most efficient chemical rocket propellants are composed of cryogenic liquid oxygen combined with liquid hydrogen or methane. Initially, the propellant needed to fuel the space economy will be launched from Earth, as both the United Launch Alliance a joint-venture of Lockheed Martin and Boeing and SpaceX have proposed to do in the near future.

However, there is a much more attractive way to source the propellants needed to support a sustained human presence in space: mining it. Space resources can be extracted from celestial bodies, most notably asteroids and the Moon. Its aim is to contribute to the peaceful exploration and sustainable utilization of space resources for the benefit of humankind. Space mining activities will initially focus on water and water-derived propellants to enable in-space infrastructure. Once this propellant is readily available, companies will begin sourcing structural metals for construction projects and eventually precious metals needed for in-space manufacturing or possibly for return to Earth.

Water is critical for all life-support functions in space: sustenance, hygiene, and food production. Water can serve as an effective shield from the dangerous radiation present in space. Water is also the single most important feedstock for in-space refineries, which will produce rocket propellants for sale to transportation providers.

Imagine the growth potential of the energy, mining, and refining industries once they are freed from the constraints of an economy that is limited only to Earth. The door is now open to in-space mining firms like Planetary Resources backed by industrial giant Bechtel and the Government of Luxembourg to capture this increasingly important market by providing water and water-based propellants to the space transportation industry.

The first orbital construction systems will be deployed before the end of the decade. These robotic spacecraft will be capable of assembling large structures in orbit and repairing or refueling existing satellites.

The future of construction in space will look nothing like it does on Earth, but it will be equally valuable because the techniques and service offerings will apply across the entire in-space value chain.

A propellant refinery can be assembled on orbit. Asteroid mines can be repaired autonomously. Solar power plants can be massively scaled and upgraded to meet the requirements of almost any project. Humans can only live, work and play in space if they have shelter from the harsh environment of space.

Today, the International Space Station ISS has had a sustained human presence for over 10 years, but this too will soon change. Numerous commercial space station companies, including one created by billionaire hotel-chain-founder Robert Bigelow, are competing for lucrative contracts that range from supporting sovereign astronauts and high-net-worth tourists, to leasing space-in-space for orbital manufacturing and research and development programmes.

Space habitats will be launched from Earth initially, but as the resource supply chain expands and metals from asteroids and the Moon become available, this sector will also come to rely on resources sourced from space. Construction firms will combine high-quality metallic feedstocks with robotic orbital assembly fleets as we gain the ability to create orbital megastructures: hotels, factories, and permanent settlements that are no longer limited by size. The first cities in space will become possible as markets for real-estate on orbit emerge.

Space will become affordable and profitable for developers. Our global economy is limited by its very name. For industrial firms who have the foresight to view space not as a stand-alone industry but as the next medium to conduct their business, the sky is not the limit.

The only limitations are the ones we put on ourselves. World Economic Forum articles may be republished in accordance with our Terms of Use.

Space is a dangerous place for humans: Microgravity sets our fluids wandering and weakens muscles, radiation tears through DNA and the harsh vacuum outside is an ever-present threat. But for materials that show incredible strength, transmit information with barely any loss, form enormous crystals or even grow into organs, the harshness of space can be the perfect construction zone. As the cost of spaceflight goes down, more of these materials may become cost-effective to make or study in space.

Space manufacturing is the production of manufactured goods in an environment outside a planetary atmosphere. Typically this includes conditions of microgravity and hard vacuum. Manufacturing in space has several potential advantages over Earth-based industry. The space environment is expected to be beneficial for production of a variety of products. Once the heavy capitalization costs of assembling the mining and manufacturing facilities is paid, the production will need to be economically profitable in order to become self-sustaining and beneficial to society. The most significant cost is overcoming the energy hurdle for boosting materials into orbit.

However, most of these processes would apply to asteroidal material as well. Some of the following applies mainly to asteroidal material. In all geologic time, the responsibilities are on our generation Or do you know somebody else who might be interested?

Basic installations or services. Equipment for a small-scale industrial plant. When considering the setting up of a fruit and vegetable processing plant, whether it be a cottage industry or a small industrial scale system, the first point to bear in mind is the infrastructure required to properly lodge all of the necessary equipment. Some time must thus be devoted to coordinate two aspects that are vital to the development of a project of this nature, namely costs and the quality of the infrastructure needed to achieve the established goals. It must always be borne in mind that since the food to be processed is intended for human consumption, the infrastructure must meet several requirements. The basic general aspects of such requirements will be analyzed in this chapter.

While this may sound like science fiction, these kinds of factories have been a reality for more than 15 years. To imagine a world where robots do all the physical work, one simply needs to look at the most ambitious and technology-laden factories of today. In June , the Chinese e-commerce giant JD. Without robots, it would take as many as workers to fully staff this 40K square foot warehouse — instead, the factory requires only five technicians to service the machines and keep them working. To answer this, we took a deep dive into 8 different steps of the manufacturing process, to see how they are starting to change:. Despite representing The timelines and technologies will vary by sector, but most steps in nearly every vertical will see improvement.

The proposed changes generally provide for an enhanced first-year CCA deduction for qualifying depreciable property used in manufacturing and processing. More information on the proposed changes is available on the Accelerated Investment Incentive webpage and on the Fall Economic Statement webpage. Section This takes the form of a deduction from Part I tax otherwise payable and is an amount equal to a specified percentage of a corporation's Canadian manufacturing and processing profits subject to certain adjustments. This Chapter provides comments on various components of the calculation and discusses activities that are and are not considered to be manufacturing or processing. Currently, the federal manufacturing and processing profits deduction rate is equal to the general rate reduction percentage as defined in subsection This means that Canadian manufacturing and processing profits are currently taxed at the same rate as other active business income that is not eligible for the federal small business deduction. Therefore, the calculation remains relevant in those jurisdictions. The Chapter also discusses the capital cost allowance CCA rules for certain manufacturing and processing machinery and equipment eligible to be included in Class 29 , 43, or These CCA classes provide accelerated write-offs for such machinery and equipment depending on when the machinery or equipment is acquired. The final part of the Chapter discusses the federal investment tax credit that may apply to certain new buildings, machinery, and equipment qualified property acquired to carry out manufacturing or processing activities in certain regions of Canada.

It is highly advisable to use hybrid seeds and not seeds from harvested tomatoes to obtain a higher disease resistance and an increased yield. It is vitally important that the tomato processing line constantly operates at maximum capacity. It is not possible to work at a very reduced capacity or — even worse — intermittently, or every other day. In fact, every time the tomato processing line is shut down, all the machinery must be cleaned, with the subsequent loss of several working hours, wastage of both a great amount of water and a great deal of product contained in the evaporator. The difference between the two products lies in the apparent viscosity, measured in Bostwick centimeters. The Hot Break product is more viscous and therefore denser , and has an average Bostwick viscosity ranging between 3.
