Source Industrial Crops and Products 20 2. Despite its unique characteristics as a natural product with multiple chemical and biophysical functionalities, it is largely under-exploited because of its image as low quality and low added value material. Also a complete lack of any organised professional co-ordination and communication tools explicitly dedicated to lignin market promotion is one of the major drawbacks for the further development of commercial applications for lignin. The major goal of this project is accelerated introduction of sustainable, high-value, lignin-based raw materials derived from leftovers in pulp and paper, and biomass processes to industry and consumers. This will be accomplished by compilation of fundamental information packages on existing and future lignin production and utilisation to create defined actions in research projects and technology activities that very precisely and with direct economic implications show the way to increased use of lignin. The fact that agriculture is a provider of non-food products is not new. Agriculture, including animal rearing and forestry, has traditionally been a source of fibres, fuel, construction and other materials like hides and skins. What is new is the scale and the range of products originating in basic agricultural raw materials, creating new important outlays for farmers and for the agri-industrial sector at large. This paper aims at providing an overview of this promising area, and at underlining its significance for the economy of the sector. Other than the traditional uses of agricultural, forestry and livestock raw materials that remain significant, new uses have developed at great speed in the last decades. To name a few of the more illustrative examples: the large scale use of feedstock and biomass to produce biofuels, the use of oilseeds to produce oleo-chemical products, the expansion on the use of starch in a wide range of products including polymers for biodegradable plastics, or the expansion on the use of fibres in the textile and automotive industry. Fuel, fibres, starch, oils, solvents, dyes, resins, proteins, speciality chemicals and pharmaceuticals, are today to various degrees of biological, agriculture origin. These products present significant advantages as compared to similar products from other origins, as for instance fossil fuels:. This bio-economy is also a large provider of employment outside the primary agricultural sector: in the EU non-food bio-based products account for 2. Plants can synthesise an immense range of compounds.

Email to a Friend. The demand for plant-based industrial raw materials has increased as well as research into expanding the utility of plants for current and future uses. Plants are renewable, have limited or positive environmental impact and have the potential to yield a wide range of products in contrast to petroleum-based materials. Plants can be used in a variety of different industries and products including bioenergy, industrial oil and starch, fibre and dye, rubber and related compounds, insecticide and land rehabilitation. This title offers a comprehensive coverage of each of these uses. Chapters discuss the identification of plant species with desired traits, their cultivation to obtain the needed raw materials, methods utilized in producing different finished products, current and future research in crop production and processing and the present state and future prospects for the industry. Providing the first systematic review of industrial crops and their uses, this book will be an important resource for students and researchers of crop science and agricultural policy makers.

An industrial crop , also called a non-food crop , is a crop grown to produce goods for manufacturing, for example of fibre for clothing, rather than food for consumption. Industrial crops is a designation given to an enterprise that attempts to raise farm sector income, and provide economic development activities for rural areas. Industrial crops also attempt to provide products that can be used as substitutes for imports from other nations. The range of crops with non-food uses is broad, but includes traditional arable crops like wheat , as well as less conventional crops like hemp and Miscanthus.
