In regions where Mary donkeys are bred large typical specimens male height at withers cm, female cm coexist with smaller ones, hardly different from the Uzbek variety.

The hybridization experiments of the National Horse Breeding Research Institute involved these animals and heavy draft mares to produced draft-pack and pack-transport mules.

The latter type out of dams of the Lokai breed were successfully tested in Tajikistan. Along a difficult km route up to an altitude of m the speed of the animals was 6. Practical mule breeding showed that the pack mule should not be vary large, as in the mountains balance and efficient movement are of the utmost importance. A short pace reduces the swinging of the pack and provides for a steady movement on poor paths.

In the Nagorny Karabakh autonomous regions of the Azerbaijan, mules with a live weight of nearly kg carry packs of kg. The Mary breed and a number of local variety occupy a rather limited area and comprises discrete "island" populations of diminishing number. The stock is declining due to low profitability of donkey breeding and the related mule production.

A mule is the offspring of a male donkey jack and a female horse mare. Of the two first generation hybrids between these two species, a mule is easier to obtain than a hinny , which is the offspring of a female donkey jenny and a male horse stallion. The size of a mule and work to which it is put depend largely on the breeding of the mule's female parent dam. Mules can be lightweight, medium weight or when produced from draft horse mares, of moderately heavy weight.

It would be hunting supplies, perhaps, or tents, or cookstoves, strung together by a single long piece of rope, looped and knotted and then cinched tight into a sculpture of odd shapes and volumes. It will carry as much as three hundred pounds, seven hours a day, twenty days straight, without complaint, strolling along under the huge, heavy cargo as if it were a bag of balloons.

Horses, donkeys and mules and their utility

American Mule Museum. History of the Mule by Dave Babb The exact origin of the mule may be somewhat difficult to determine, but its ancestry must begin with the origin of its parents - - the wild ass donkey and the horse. Mules, therefore, must have been bred in the wild in areas where both the wild ass and horse occupied the same territory. Mules in Ancient Times The mule has been deliberately bred by man since ancient times. The breeding of a jackass male donkey with a female horse mare is the most common and oldest known hybrid. A somewhat less common hybrid, the hinny, was also bred by crossing a female donkey with a male horse. The inhabitants of Paphlagonia and Nicaea the northern and northwestern parts of modern day Turkey are said to have been the first to breed mules. The miners marked their route with carvings on rocks showing boats and mules not camels!
