Tulips Tulipa form a genus of spring-blooming perennial herbaceous bulbiferous geophytes having bulbs as storage organs. The flowers are usually large, showy and brightly colored, generally red, pink, yellow, or white usually in warm colors. They often have a different colored blotch at the base of the tepals petals and sepals, collectively , internally. Because of a degree of variability within the populations, and a long history of cultivation, classification has been complex and controversial.

How the business of making golf balls saved four small American townsVIDEO ON THE TOPIC: EN: Unveiling ceremony of first commercial plant to capture CO2 from air
Posted By: Dr. Identify Opportunities. When you think about doing business in Africa, sectors like agriculture, mining, ICT, retail, or property may quickly come to your mind. Today, I want to give you slightly different insights.
Palm oil is a billion Dollar business worldwide. Nigeria is the only country that has really managed to commercialize it significantly. However, Africa today is contributing only a tiny percentage of world production, and as the demand will increase and major producers such as Indonesia and Malaysia have very much reached their maximum capacities, the world will look towards Africa for palm oil production.
Processing oil palm fruits for edible oil has been practiced in Africa for thousands of years, and the oil produced is an essential ingredient in much of the traditional West African cuisine. The traditional process is simple, but tedious and inefficient. There are several ways, in which you can monetize palm oil production in Western Africa and run an ethical business. Here are a couple of ideas:. The farmers in the cooperative will sell to you at a better price than they earned before, as you want to create motivation and a win-win situation.
This way you can buy and sell the oil in bulk without planting yourself. You will need to look for communities who very actively produce for subsistence and local markets. Sell palm oil production equipment locally: Palm oil production will most certainly increase, in particular in West Africa, and there will be a greater emphasis on medium and larger scale projects. Trading related equipment across Western Africa for ethical medium-sized enterprises could be a viable business.
Niche : There is red palm oil, but there is also coconut oil made of the meat or kernel of matured coconuts. Producing such oil for the hair and beauty industry may be a valuable niche considering that this industry is a very dynamic billion Dollar industry in Africa. If you want to find out more about palm oil production, read a wonderful blog post by my business partner John-Paul here: Red Palm Oil — How to make money from this curative, but overlooked business.
Although it has great market and export potential, it is hardly collected or commercially produced in Africa. There are several ways to start production: If you have money to invest or a plot of land it can be commercially grown and processed with imported machinery. The video was shot at the end of and at that time the company claimed to be the first of its kind in Africa.
I am sure not many more — if any at all — have joined since. It takes about 2 years to grow them. Or you build a collection network of people in rural areas where the plant grows wildly and abundantly. You could then start extracting the gel manually and sell smaller amounts to the local beauty industry — for example a local entrepreneur who produces creams, shampoos, or soaps.
Alternatively, you can produce your own Aloe vera beauty or alternative health care product for the African market. There are many interesting YouTube videos available in this regard to get you going, including home grown Aloe vera utilization. The gum exudes in the form of small droplets on the wounds that steadily grow in size until they become nodules of cm diameter.
These nodules are ready to be picked for sale after about weeks. Subsequent pickings are available at intervals of weeks. It is then usually dried or aged for one year before being processed into spray dried powder.
It is also used in flavorings and in pharmaceutical preparations as a building and emulsifying agent. Other industrial products that use technical grades of gum arabic include adhesives, textiles, printing, lithography, water colours, paints, paper sizing and pottery glazing.
It is a great ingredient for both national, regional, and international markets — with international market providing possibly the best opportunities, as the industries that use them are very well developed and the ingredient cannot be sourced widely.
The acacia trees have been planted for years across the country to protect crops from desert sand encroachment. But I do not necessarily advice you to trade in the Sudan, as large part of the trade are owned and strictly overlooked by government cooperations, which can make a start-up venture very challenging. Although insiders told me it has now been largely privatized, but corruption is ripe. Other countries that are regarded to have a great potential to work towards similar quality are in the Sudano-Sahelian zone of Africa such as Chad, Nigeria, Mali and Senegal.
But quite frankly operating in some of those markets is not an easy undertaking. Nigeria is another major producer of gum arabic, but production has declined.
Senegal seems a good option, and possibly Ghana or Tanzania — both countries may may have less tree density, but are vibrant economies with a relatively easy and less risky business environment. If you own agricultural land in any African dryland region, you may consider to integrate Acacia senegal or A. This will protect soils and in a few years provide you with additional income from gum production. Now, this one is still a well kept secret.
I happen to know quite a bit about the plant — I wrote my PhD about it in in a context of food security and rural development in Eastern Africa. In simple words: Prosopis juliflora also named mesquite is a thorny and highly invasive shrub in dryland Africa. It has been introduced to Africa largely in the 70ies and 80ies, because it just grew despite droughts, but now it is invading grazing areas and agricultural land aggressively destroying the native plant species.
I could write obviously a lot about how Propsopis can be used commercially, but in this article I want to focus on the fruits. As a result many animals get ill or even die, hence local communities have yet another reason to dislike the plant. I wished this knowledge was widely available among communities that often face shortage of food. This is why it has today become a weed across many African countries.
I hope you feel inspired to start small and potentially grow this into a powerful business with great community impact! Looking forward to it! What a lovely article, I am interested in the Aloe Vera production. If possible can you provide me more information on how to start and potential markets in Africa or Abroad.
Hi Patricia Great, I think this is a wonderful idea. The good things is that you will only be cutting some leaves, so you are not harming the plant as such. Growing aloe vera yourself or in a local community, would probably be the best way towards commercializing it, however it takes about 2 years for the plant to grow, so you can use that time to get familiar with the plant, processing methods, and marketing using wild plants in the meanwhile.
So I am suggesting a possible two-track approach to get you started: 1 Looking for land — around your house, or plots of rural communities you could approach. They can plant even around existing crops.
Start planting…. This means check the pharmacies and health food stores in South Africa to see if Aloe vera is available, how easy the access it and what it costs.
You may also ring up the South African company featured in my article to inquire about cost. Sounds like great profit margins and income given the relatively low production cost. Of course you can target the cosmetic industry in South Africa, I am sure there will be enough space in the market still. But SA is usually a bit more competitive, and you may have great opportunities to markets across Africa.
But it all starts small…. This is a great idea, I am in Botswana and we just consider this plant as a weed more especially in our fields.
By any chance do you know any pharmaceutical companies that processes the gel down there in Europe or else where whom i can contact. Note that Botswana is a lucrative export market for South Africa so they usually not share business info with their potential competitor. Harnet, nice article you have done.
Thank you very much for your question. I think it can be very difficult to get into the palm oil trade market international when you are just starting out — the same for Aloe vera, because although there is demand out there in the global market you will need to produce in certain capacities and according to certain standards.
If Aloe Vera is of interest to you — and it can be easily collected as a wild plant, and additionally also grown in a simple backyard or garden to get you started — I would start with that and focus on LOCAL cosmetics and possibly health product firms as your target market.
The good thing is that you will find an increasing number of local cosmetic production in Nigeria, and focusing them Aloe vera gel as an ingredient is a simple approach to get your foot into the door and grow from there. Try to reach out to some of those local firms to get some feedback, do a bit of research, but I think it could go a long way.
Congratulation for the work you are doing. I am planning to start aloe vera farming and would like to get as much as information about the plant and its various use, particularly in cosmetics. Harnet Identify Opportunities. Bio Latest Posts. Latest posts by Dr.

4 Highly Commercial Plant Products That Grow Wild in Africa
Humans use plants in many ways:. Production of a pure and usable plant product is often a lengthy process. For example, the commercial production of timber involves many stages. The seeds are sown and raised in nurseries where weeding and feeding are of prime importance. Then after two or three years the seedlings are planted outside to grow. The first small trees can be harvested after 15 years, but most of the trees will be felled after 40 - 50 years. Other examples of processing are malting of barley, or the production of oil and margarine from rapeseed.

There are two processes for heat-treating glass: heat-strengthening and tempering. Both processes take place on the same processing equipment and involve heating the glass to approximately 1, degrees, then force-cooling it to create surface and edge compression. Which process is required depends on the specific application of the glass. Tempered glass, which also may be called safety glazing, is typically specified to provide security or to keep occupants safe wherever there is the potential for broken glass to hurt people if it becomes a projectile, such as in a fire, explosion, tornado or hurricane. It must be used in patio doors, entrance doors, side lites and other hazardous locations.
This is the average expected mature height by width in feet or inches. Feet are represented by a single quote and inches by a double quote. Under poor growing conditions plants may be slightly to significantly smaller, whereas excellent growing conditions can produce larger more vigorous plants. USDA Cold Hardiness Zones were established to give gardeners, horticulturists, farmers, nurseries, and landscape architects a universal way to describe where a plant will survive with regard to average winter lows for a region. And these are averages, here in zone 8B 'A' represents the colder half of a zone and 'B' represents the warmer half of the zone and they are separated by about 5 o F we have seen single digits but that is the exception but should be noted by the daring gardener. Each zone is separated by 10 o F and the map was updated in Our zones do not always agree but we try to use our own experience as to what can be depended on to return or have known reputable gardens and or horticulturists to reliably grow that plant in zones that are usually colder but sometimes warmer than what other resources have available. For more on stretching your cold hardiness zones see the "Do you know the many benefits of an organic mulch" below. If you do not know your zone you can find it using the link below. Full Sun - 8 hours or more of direct sunlight; Partial Sun or Partial Shade - hours of direct sunlight; AM Sun or Morning Sun or Cool Sunlight - cool sunlight but usually in the shade during the heat of the day; Light Shade - Bright indirect sunlight for much of the day; Filtered Shade - may receive some amount of direct moving sunlight like through trees but usually not for any extended period especially during the heat of the day; Shade - no or very little direct sunlight, especially not during the heat of the day.
