Our program offers a convenient way for you to acquire the labels that you need for your certified products.

Our Marking and Labeling Systems program covers labels, nameplates or markers, and label materials that have been submitted for evaluation in accordance with prescribed permanence of marking performance requirements so that they can be used to display information on products.

Most products are required to be permanently marked with specific safety-related information including hazards, warnings, cautionary markings, installation instructions and electrical ratings.

This program provides a convenient way for you to acquire labels that meet marking performance requirements applicable to your UL Certified products. Marking and Labeling Systems are covered under the following five categories based on the type of product and end-use application.

They are suitable for use on a wide variety of UL Certified products. A brief description of each category and corresponding CCN can be found further down this webpage. Evaluation for Marking and Labeling Systems Recognition includes a construction examination and testing for permanency. Environmental conditioning of labels typically includes testing for exposure to high humidity or occasional exposure to water, elevated temperatures, sunlight or chemical agents.

After environmental conditioning, labels are visually examined for curling, wrinkling, shrinkage or loss of adhesion around the perimeter. Testing also typically includes evaluation of legibility, resistance to defacement and adhesion.

Guidelines addressing the suitability of the label when used with an end product are included in the UL Report under Conditions of Acceptability. The Conditions of Acceptability generally cover application surfaces, temperature ratings and additional exposure conditions for which the label was found acceptable. The Conditions of Acceptability may also include print color limitations, label size limitations and special use applications.

Label converters and printers that use recognized label materials, such as label stocks, laminating adhesives and overlaminations, can receive the benefit of the recognition established for the label material when establishing recognition for their printed labels.

This process is known as Label Adoption. We are uniquely positioned to provide a complete view of how products function within a given system. This is particularly critical in the plastics and components industry, as interactions between substances, parts, systems and the environment can be the cause of a significant number of hazards.

These failures are rarely apparent when components are tested individually. Our technical experts can also help align your products to the appropriate UL Certification category and the applicable Standards. This enables manufacturers of UL Certified products to easily source components that demonstrably meet their compliance needs and project specifications.

Additionally, our worldwide presence allows us to provide local services to you and your team. Our trustworthy reputation provides an important product differentiator in a crowded marketplace.

With label adoption, you can easily demonstrate your labels meet UL safety requirements while gaining quick market access, greater product acceptance and a faster return on investments. Paper is a thin material produced by pressing together moist fibres of cellulose pulp derived from wood , rags or grasses , and drying them into flexible sheets. It is a versatile material with many uses, including writing , printing , packaging, cleaning , decorating, and a number of industrial and construction processes. Papers are essential in legal or non-legal documentation. The pulp papermaking process developed in China during the early 2nd century CE, possibly as early as the year CE, [1] by the Han court eunuch Cai Lun , although the earliest archaeological fragments of paper derive from the 2nd century BCE in China. The oldest known archaeological fragments of the immediate precursor to modern paper date to the 2nd century BCE in China. In the 13th century, the knowledge and uses of paper spread from China through the Middle East to medieval Europe , where the first water powered paper mills were built. Keller independently developed processes for pulping wood fibres. Before the industrialisation of paper production the most common fibre source was recycled fibres from used textiles, called rags. The rags were from hemp , linen and cotton. It was not until the introduction of wood pulp in that paper production was not dependent on recycled materials from ragpickers.

Letterpress printing is a technique of relief printing using a printing press , a process by which many copies are produced by repeated direct impression of an inked, raised surface against sheets or a continuous roll of paper. In practice, letterpress also includes other forms of relief printing with printing presses, such as wood engravings , photo-etched zinc "cuts" plates , and linoleum blocks, which can be used alongside metal type, or wood type, in a single operation, as well as stereotypes and electrotypes of type and blocks. In theory, anything that is "type high" or. Letterpress printing was the normal form of printing text from its invention by Johannes Gutenberg in the midth century until the 19th century and remained in wide use for books and other uses until the second half of the 20th century. Letterpress printing remained the primary means of printing and distributing information until the 20th century, when offset printing was developed, which largely supplanted its role in printing books and newspapers. All forms of data collection were affected by the invention of letterpress printing, as were many careers such as teachers, preachers, physicians and surgeons and artist-engineers. Johannes Gutenberg is credited with the development in the western hemisphere, in about , of modern movable type printing from individually cast, reusable letters set together in a form frame or chase. Movable type was first invented in China using ceramic type in AD. Gutenberg also invented a wooden printing press, based on the extant wine press , where the type surface was inked with leather-covered ink balls and paper laid carefully on top by hand, then slid under a padded surface and pressure applied from above by a large threaded screw. It was Gutenberg's "screw press" or hand press that was used to print copies of the Bible.
